Joi, as played by Ana de Armas, continues to be one of the most discussed characters from Blade Runner 2049. In our ongoing conversations, Shoulder of Orion hosts: Dan, Patrick, JM, and contributing host Micah invite Dr. Robin Bunce back on to speak on Joi's role in 2049 and her humanity (or lack thereof) within the story. Rounding out the symposium panel is special guest Barbara Schmuker, a first-time guest on the show, and yet another important voice in the fandom. Please join us for this exciting/long-awaited/often requested episode.

One concept I got from Joi as it relates to Officer K is a system of control in the guise of compassion and love. It reminds me of what Tyrell says to Deckard about being able to control the replicants easier by creating a cushion for their emotions. I believe that the Joi program was Wallace's system of control for the Nexus 9 replicants, especially the Blade Runners. Just before Luv steps on the eminator and erases Joi she looks at K and says, We hope you've enjoyed our product. Bottom line, this is the most accurate description of Joi, she had served her purpose at making K more controlled and of course her antenna was allowing Luv to track K a majority of the film. Then at the end of the film when K sees Joi as the giant pink hollow shell that she is He sees that it was an illusion, and he can help real love thrive by reuniting a Father and his daughter, the most unconditional love I have personally ever known in my life. Thanks again for keeping this discussion going in all the directions it does, BR is part of my daily life, podcast included.
